What is a PET CT scan?
A PET CT (Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography) scan is a combined imaging technique that provides detailed pictures of structures inside the body and shows how they are functioning. It is particularly useful for detecting cancer, monitoring treatment effectiveness, and checking for cancer recurrence.
How does a PET CT scan work?
During a PET CT scan, a small amount of radioactive glucose is injected into the body. Cancer cells absorb more of this glucose than normal cells, making them visible on the PET scan. The CT scan provides detailed anatomical information, while the PET scan highlights areas of abnormal metabolic activity.
Why would my doctor order a PET CT scan?
Your doctor may order a PET CT scan to:
- Detect cancer and determine its spread (metastasis)
